This is Nurse Sofie, who can often be spotted in gorgeously creative, colorful makeup looks when she’s not decked out in PPE. I had the honor of giving this Makeup Queen her very first CREAM makeup products (NTB, worn here), which she’d previously avoided because of oily skin concerns. Turns out she loves them! I saw an article today in The Guardian by Annette McGivney (“Like sending bees to war”) about the devastating affects the industrial cultivation of almonds is having on honeybee populations, and it reminded me of a post I wrote a while back titled “When Vegan Cosmetics are Misleading” about how relying on “vegan” as the sole buzzword for determining a product’s “goodness” is not enough. Almond milk became popular as a vegan alternative to cow milk, but the switch has been catastrophic for honey bees, in addition to being wildly water-intensive in a region plagued by drought (Central California). Intentions are good, marketing is tricky, and it always pays to look a little more closely to make sure the decision you make is having the impact you intend. Personal opinion, oat milk tastes better in coffee anyway. Visual of the article in my story.
ICYMI: Johnson & Johnson announced yesterday that they'll be discontinuing talc-based baby powder sales in North America (via @nytimes). This is a big deal, but it's about more than baby powder. ⠀

The problem here is multi-faceted: ⠀
1) Talc is mined from the Earth, and can easily be contaminated in the process with another naturally occurring silicate mineral that's a well-known carcinogen: Asbestos (via the FDA). Unfortunately, even a tiny bit of exposure to asbestos can be detrimental. (PSA: Just because it's "natural" doesn't mean it's good for you.)⠀
2) Method of exposure: Talc-based baby powder is applied (usually) to areas of the vulva, where it has ability to migrate into the vagina. The allegations against J&J baby powder stem from the positive correlation between using the product as intended and development of ovarian cancer. Where you put something matters: Putting talc on the tough, unbroken skin of your knee is probably way less of an issue.⠀
3) Talc is NOT unique to baby powder. Fortunately, possible asbestos contamination in talc used in cosmetics does not appear to pose the same health hazard as via inhalation or when used as baby powder. However, if you're horrified by this news from J&J, I invite you to check your labels. A brief scan of popular products sold at Sephora (not meant to slander Sephora, just meaning to say "super mainstream") shows talc as the first ingredient in many eyeshadows, blushes, and powders. Again, there have not been the same allegations raised against the use of talc in makeup, but YOU get to decide acceptable risks. If you love these products and want to continue using them, be mindful to keep those powders out of your eyes, nose, and mouth, and be conscious about not breathing in your makeup powders (but that's advice for pretty much all loose powder makeup). #readyourlabels

Sure, these babies are separated into categories of “lip&cheek,” “lid,” and highlighter, but - as I’ve always said - there are no rules here. The beauty of NTB is any of the products can be used anywhere. Try Arrakis lid as a contour or highlighter (depending on skin tone). A personal favorite of mine is to use this baby (As If) on lips, cheeks, and lids for a monochrome look.
